Naples’ historic shops and famous local brands, with a taste of special local treats.
This tour takes us along the main shopping streets of the city, acquainting us with some famous labels which got started in Naples. We begin with a coffee at Gambrinus, one of the oldest cafes in Italy. We cross Piazza Trieste and Trento to the Umberto Gallery for a taste of a wonderful local pastry, the baba. Leaving the Gallery, we are at the San Carlo Opera House, the oldest in Europe, where world famous orchestras perform all season long. In Piazza Plebiscito the Royal Palace faces the colonade of the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola. After so much grandeur, we continue our walk along via Chiaia, the street linking two sections of the city and lined with shops on both sides. We recommend a stop at the historic leather shop of Tramontano with its unique bags and accessories. And Marinella from where Bill Clinton and Prince Albert of Monte Carlo order their neckties. Continuing down via Carlo Poerio, we will visit a former church which has become a very special bookshop where Grimaldi publishing has produced an excellent collection of art books about Naples. To end our walk, we visit a modern local tavern where we can enjoy a tasty selection of Neapolitan dishes accompanied by wines from the Campania region. Or in alternative, a fishmonger will serve us his delicious fried fish on the street. Whatever looks freshest when we stroll by.

We finally understood why in Napoli pasta becomes another dish: we went to Gragnano, the world capital of maccaroni. Here it is a matter of lifestyle. In the ancient pasta factories, they have told us everything about the secrets of the dough and it seemed to eat a plate never tasted before.
